Vice Admiral Murtala H. Nyako (GCON)


Vice Admiral MURTALA HAMMANYERO NYAKO (rtd) was born at Mayo-Belwa, Adamawa State, Nigeria on 27th August, 1943.

He commenced his elementary education from 1952 to 1955; secondary education in 1958 and later joined the Britania Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, England in September 1963 and was commissioned as a Sub-lieutenant in the Nigerian Navy in September 1965. He also underwent various courses in institutions in the US, UK and Asia.

Vice Admiral Nyako started his career in the (Royal) Nigerian Navy in October 1966 where he served meritoriously until September 1993 when he retired from the service with the rank of Vice Admiral.
During this period, he served in the following capacities:
* Commanding Officer of a Patrol Craft,
* Landing Craft and the first missile carrying ship of the Nigerian Navy.
* Chief of Naval Operations 
* Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command
* Flag officer Commanding Naval Training Command
* Chief of Naval Staff
* Deputy Chief of Defence Staff
During his career life, Vice Admiral NYAKO also held exalted positions in Nigeria such as the First Governor of Niger State from Feb. 1976 - Dec. 1977, Member, National Ruling Councils as well as Member, National Management Economic Team of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Vice Admiral NYAKO is currently the Executive Governor, Adamawa State under which he has deemed necessary to set up Nyako International Soccer Academy to harness the abundant soccer talents in the state as well as empower the youths of Adamawa State through sports.
